meditation on the state of things

this new woman has learned

her husband is the ex wife's same

lover. she is distraught to discover

he will mistreat her all the same.

the new woman is looking for

apartments in the city, her cats

lounging in his high rise windows

the life of seven years they've built

now creasing at the edges. in a rage,

he's gone. unreachable. the new

woman wonders who he became

that day on the couches, when he

cursed her and his pupils billowed.

the new woman thinks of the ex wife

wishes she could say, i am so sorry.

i had no idea. but what a lie that

would be.
