the wisdom of the wide hexagon
sliced in the top of a pomegranate
teeming with life
served up as a bedtime snack
back when i was a kid
we didn't (get to) eat like this
avocados were exotic
stove top stuffing on the regular
later when it was just the two of us
my mom seemed to turn a blind eye
to my additions to the grocery cart
in 9th grade I ate shrimp cocktail
for dinner each night
in 10th grade I ate only
smores pop tarts for months
we must have dined separately
but it's a strain to remember

  1. "we must have dined separately but it's a strain to remember" dang, yes. this trips me up all the time, how my parents had a body, too, that needed food, and needs food, even if i never experienced their bodies as needing or wanting anything (except booze, cigarettes, coffee, diet pepsi). we ate a lot of shake and bake pork chops. what a lucky kid to (get to) eat pomegranates with you! thanks for sharing <3
