Amaranth

Pretty short on poignancy.
But I did cry at that show when she sang about you being gone and everywhere.
And the tomatoes.
Oh yep the tomatoes.
Swollen and surprised
Getting round and weird.
I bet they feel only requited longing
And I bet they strut.

I saw a woman so beautiful that I
Started to measure my movements.
Swooping low to duck a branch
And lifting the clusters of tomato
in a twine sling and securing
To the trellis like I’d done it many times.
Imagining her seeing me and noticing the way my back looked.
She spoke to me for a long time.

I went home with multiple bouquets
And I fried the fallen green fruits
Until they were crispy and luscious.
Crinkle melt.
I thought about her eyebrows.

I’ve been dressing as if she might see me.
I think we’ll cross paths and I want to be glowing.
